Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! , Dibakar Banerjee

Last Semester Log

As an ardent fan of DB’s films, I went in with very high expectations to watch this film. That’s when the erring started. Detective Byomkesh Bakshy bores you with unnecessary long shots, DB’s self-indulgence in his production design and a very predictable plot. While Banerjee’s previous films kept sentimentality at bay, DBB resorts to corniness multiple times especially in its portrayal of an over-the-top bad guy (otherwise played well by Neeraj Kabi). I felt exhausted by the end, having gained next to no thrills throughout the 2 hour 40 minutes. The performance by Sushant Singh Rajput and Sneha Khanwalkar’s score are the only saving graces in the film.

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! goes on to prove that even good Indian filmmakers are still inept in handling big production films.
